Drill Music’s Most Promising Rising Star

King Von, Dayvon Daquan Bennett (known professionally as “Von”) was one of drill music’s rising stars. An artist with powerful storytelling ability and charisma, King Von was worth keeping an eye on.

Lil Durk propelled Von to the forefront and signed him to his Only The Family label. With dynamic flows and an unconventional sense of reality, Von became an unforgettable force in his scene.

1. His father was a legend in the Southside

King Von was raised in Chicago’s O Block neighborhood on Chicago’s southside – same place as Chief Keef. While his rap career may have been brief, it still made an impactful statement about him within music circles worldwide.

Lil Durk signed him to his OTF label and released Grandson Vol 1 with viral single “Crazy Story.” Prior to his passing in November 2020, Grandson released Grandson Vol 1.

King Von Autopsy left behind an outstanding legacy and many dedicated fans in spite of his short rap career. A talented rapper with lots of potential, it was sad that he died so young. Additionally, he left behind his mother and two half-siblings who remained very close. King Von had an open heart and cared deeply about those around him.

2. He was an athlete

Dayvon Daquan Bennett, born and raised on Chicago’s South Side neighborhood “O Block,” quickly rose through the ranks of Chicago’s drill scene after his fluid storytelling caught the ear of established rapper Lil Durk who signed him to his Only the Family collective. His 2018 single “Crazy Story” gained significant traction within drill circles before Grandson Vol. 1 dropped in September 2019, featuring Lil Durk on some tracks; one month later came Welcome to O’Block; which propelled Bennett into rap music’s upper ranks.

Von was an exceptional lyricist despite his gang-lord heritage and intimidating persona. He could convey the culture of his youth gang with disarming candor rarely seen in music of this nature. Unfortunately, his success was cut short when an incident outside an Atlanta nightclub on November 6th 2020 caused his death at age 26.

3. He had a lot of enemies

Dayvon Daquan Bennett, more commonly known by his stage name King Von, emerged onto his city’s drill scene after impressing established rapper Lil Durk with his fluid storytelling style. Durk invited Von to join Only the Family label and released “Crazy Story”, his viral 2018 single that made headlines around the world. Von released his first mixtape Grandson Vol. 1 later that same year while Welcome to O’Block was his inaugural studio set release a year after that.

Von’s narrative songs were unlike many drill artists’ who focused solely on flaunting their gangster heritage with loudness, boasting of both empathy and humor while providing dead-eye nihilism with deadpan delivery.

Even with his success, the rapper found himself under attack from rivals and haters alike. When his assassination outside an Atlanta nightclub made headlines nationwide in November 2020, it was tragic he couldn’t take that final step to return home and reinstate himself as a true king presence within the community.

4. He moved to Atlanta

King Von was an honest rapper with an extraordinary story to share. Before his untimely passing, he rose rapidly as one of the most exciting young stars in hip hop. Recently, his estate released an emotional cinematic clip for their new track called “Robberies.” Produced by ATL Jacob and directed by Rook.

This video vividly brings Von’s rebuke of Chicago gangster culture to life, featuring fellow Chicago rappers Boss Top and DqFrmDaO as well as A-list street lyricists 21 Savage and G Herbo.

King Von’s death on November 6 in Atlanta illuminated the violent feuds among street gangs in Atlanta’s Black neighborhoods. The 26-year-old belonged to Black Disciples’ Parkway Gardens faction and had gun and theft convictions in Cook County before releasing his debut album “Welcome to O Block,” shortly before he was shot to death. This act of violence shed light on Chicago-based gangs’ role in Atlanta violence where police claim they continue fighting each other and commit crimes outside the city limits.
